The Timeless Journey of Cats and Humans
For thousands of years, cats have lived alongside humans as companions and protectors โ once guardians of grain, later sacred icons, and today beloved companions. The domestication of cats is one of historyโs most intriguing stories, weaving together survival, symbolism, and affection.
First Steps Toward Domestication of Cats

Archaeologists believe cats began living near humans about 9,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, the cradle of farming. Early villages attracted mice and rats, which in turn drew wildcats (most likely Felis silvestris lybica, the African wildcat).
Unlike dogs, who were intentionally bred for tasks, cats chose their own path. By lingering near human settlements, they found a steady food supply. People, in return, welcomed their presence because they protected valuable harvests.
From the very start, cats showed a talent for making themselves essential โ and even today, many act as though they own every room they walk into.
Cats in the Land of the Pharaohs
No retelling of cat history can skip Ancient Egypt. Here, cats rose far above the role of rodent hunters to become sacred animals.
The goddess Bastet, often portrayed with a feline head, symbolised motherhood, protection, and fertility. Families treasured their cats as household companions, and harming one was considered a grave crime. Cats were even mummified and laid to rest with their owners, while Egyptian art immortalised their grace for eternity.
Travelling the World
From Egypt, cats spread through trade and exploration. Sailors kept them aboard ships to keep rodents away, and in doing so, cats found new homes across Europe and Asia.
By the Roman era, they were well established, valued both for companionship and pest control. In medieval times, however, cats sometimes faced suspicion and were wrongly tied to superstition and witchcraft. Yet their usefulness ensured they never disappeared from human society.
From Working Animals to Cherished Pets
By the 18th and 19th centuries, cats were no longer just farm helpers but adored household pets. Breeders began developing the wide range of cat breeds we recognise today.
Depending on the organisation, there are now around 70 officially recognised breeds, from elegant Siamese to fluffy Persians. Each has its own charm, whether chosen for beauty, character, or even allergy-friendly traits.
Relatives in the Wild
While domestic cats (Felis catus) are unique for their bond with humans, they belong to the larger Felidae family of around 38 wild cat species โ from powerful tigers to small and secretive wildcats.
Genetically, our pets are still closest to the African wildcat, their original ancestor. Despite differences in size and habitat, all cats share grace, hunting instincts, and an unmistakable independence.
Why We Remain Captivated by Cats
The story of domestication is really a story of connection. Cats are not just pets; they are muses, symbols, and daily companions who inspire countless works of art and literature.
As an artist, I feel this deeply. I often find myself sketching or painting custom cat portraits of my own grey-and-white cat, Bell, whose quiet confidence fills our home. Watching the way he moves, stretches, or naps brings endless inspiration for my artwork.
Our bond with cats goes far beyond practicality. It is a relationship rooted in admiration, affection, and shared space. Whether curled up on a sofa or captured in artwork, cats remain timeless friends who continue to enrich our lives.
Inspired by the elegance of cats, I create original Hand-painted Cat Portraits that celebrate their unique spirit. Each piece is crafted with care, and many have been transformed into fine art prints and personalised pet portrait commissions โ special keepsakes for fellow cat lovers.
Alongside my original artworks and Custom Cat Portraits, I also offer a large collection of Greeting Cards For Feline Lovers. Each design is created from my own cat-inspired paintings and illustrations, making them a unique way to share your love of cats with friends and family. Whether youโre looking for something fun, heart-warming, or elegant, these cards are made with care and perfect for every cat enthusiast.
