Custom Dog Portrait – A Timeless Way to Celebrate Your Best Friend

Custom Dog Portrait – Hand-Drawn Dog Portraits from Your Photos

A custom dog portrait is one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate the unique personality of your beloved dog. Dogs are not just pets – they are loyal companions, family members, and wonderful friends who share our lives every single day. Capturing their character in a hand-created artwork allows their spirit to live on in a beautiful and timeless way.

Over the years, custom dog portraits have become one of the most popular types of commissioned artwork. Many dog lovers choose to commission a portrait to celebrate a current companion, remember a beloved dog who has passed, or give a thoughtful and deeply personal gift to someone special.

A hand-drawn custom dog portrait is more than just an image – it is a piece of art created with care, patience, and attention to detail, designed to capture the true character and expression of your dog.

If you would like to see examples of my previous work, you can visit my pet portrait gallery where you’ll find many custom dog portraits as well as other pet commissions.

Different Styles of Custom Dog Portraits

I offer several styles of custom dog portraits, allowing you to choose the medium that best suits your taste and your home.

Portraits can be created in:

  • Pastel

  • Acrylic

  • Oil

Each medium has its own beautiful qualities.

Pastel Custom Dog Portraits

Pastel portraits are the most popular and most affordable option.

They are created faster than oil or acrylic paintings while still allowing for incredible detail and softness in the fur and expression.

Pastel is a wonderful medium for animal portraits because it allows me to build up layers and layers of colour, creating a rich, painterly effect. Although the artwork is technically drawn, the style I use is closer to painting because the entire surface is fully covered with pastel layers.

For my custom dog portraits in pastel, I use only premium quality professional pastels on Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper or  board, which provides excellent colour depth and durability.

One important thing to note about pastel artwork is that it must be framed behind glass to protect the surface. I am always happy to frame the portrait for you so it arrives ready to hang on the wall. The framing service itself is complimentary — you only pay for the frame you choose.

Oil Custom Dog Portraits

Oil painting is the most traditional and timeless medium used in portrait art.

For centuries, artists have used oils to create masterpieces that last for generations. A custom dog portrait in oil has a rich depth of colour and a classic, elegant appearance.

I usually paint oil portraits in a classical style, focusing on capturing the true character and beauty of your dog.

The only challenge with oil painting is the drying time. Even after the painting is completed, it needs to remain with me for several weeks or sometimes a couple of months so the paint can dry properly. Once fully dry, the portrait is carefully finished with a final protective varnish before being delivered to you.

Acrylic Custom Dog Portraits

Acrylic paintings are a wonderful option if you prefer a bold, vibrant, and slightly sharper look.

Acrylics allow for strong colour contrasts and beautiful textures, making them a great choice for modern interiors or for those who prefer a brighter style.

One major advantage of acrylic painting is the fast drying time. Once the portrait is completed, it usually only takes a few days before it can be varnished and safely posted to you.

Working From Your Dog’s Photos

Many people worry that their photos may not be good enough for a custom dog portrait, but please don’t worry about that.

I am always happy to look at any photos you have. Even if the quality is not perfect, or the composition is not exactly what you imagined, I can usually still work with them.

Thanks to modern tools, I can now study and enhance reference images much more clearly than in the past. In fact, in almost 99% of cases I can create a portrait from the photographs provided, even if there is only one photo available.

Composition is also very flexible. I can:

  • Adjust the positioning of your dog

  • Combine elements from several photos

  • Improve the composition to create a balanced portrait

Before starting the final artwork, I will usually prepare an approximate composition preview so you can see how the portrait will look and confirm that you are happy with it.

If you are thinking about commissioning your own custom dog portrait, you can also find more information about sizes, styles, and the process on my Custom Dog Portrait page.

Delivery of Custom Dog Portraits

Your finished custom dog portrait can be safely posted anywhere in the UK.

Portraits are usually framed and ready to hang.

International shipping is also possible. However, when sending portraits abroad I usually recommend posting without the frame to ensure safe delivery.

Fully Hand-Drawn Custom Dog Portraits

Today there are many low-priced portraits available online, but many of them are digitally generated or printed rather than truly hand-created.

Every custom dog portrait I create is completely hand drawn or hand painted. I do not use digital painting or automated tools in the creation of the artwork.

Each portrait is created with patience, experience, and genuine care. I always aim to capture not only the physical appearance of your dog but also their unique personality and spirit.

For many people who truly love art, knowing that the portrait is a real, handcrafted piece of artwork makes it even more meaningful.

A Beautiful Gift for Dog Lovers

A custom dog portrait makes an unforgettable gift for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, or as a touching memorial to a beloved companion.

Dogs give us unconditional love, loyalty, and joy. A portrait created especially for you is a beautiful way to celebrate that bond and keep those memories alive for years to come.

If you are not sure which portrait size to choose, a pet portrait gift voucher can also be a wonderful present, allowing the recipient to commission their own custom portrait when they are ready.

If you enjoy artwork featuring animals, you may also like to visit my online shop Animal Art Cards, where I offer greeting cards created from my original drawings and paintings.
